What is meditation?

Meditation is a set of techniques designed to help you relax, reduce stress and develop yourself. There are many different practices, which mostly originated in India, but most involve you sitting quietly and placing your attention on an “anchor”, which gives you somewhere to rest your awareness away from the relentless stream of everyday thoughts.

Anchors include breath, body sensations, visualisations and mantras. Vedic Meditation uses a mantra, which is a word with no meaning repeated silently in your head. It leads you to a state on inner stillness and silence.

Vedic Meditation

The Vedic Meditation technique dates back thousands of years. Countless scientific studies in recent decades have shown it to reduce stress and anxiety. We sit with our eyes closed for 20 minutes once or twice a day and effortlessly repeat a mantra, gently returning to it whenever we find ourselves lost in thought.

Why Vedic?

Unlike other anchors, the mantra speaks the same language as our thoughts. “I’ve tried several other techniques,” says Rory, “including mindfulness-based breathing and body-scan techniques and have found mantra to be the easiest. For many of us, hearing is something we already associate with relaxation and the mantra uses the same vibrational language as music, which resonates with many of us.”

The approach

There’s no concentration, force or control, we just gently bring our awareness to the mantra when we remember to. There’s a misconception that meditation is about forcing the mind into a state of inactivity. As anyone who has ever tried to do this will know, it’s impossible! The mind is more like a wild horse that you need to befriend and gently guide rather than forcing. The technique teaches us to take an effortless approach of clear intention but non-attachment which brings benefits to us in the rest of our lives.

Benefits

As well as making you feel relaxed and centred, countless scientific studies have shown meditation to give practitioners the following benefits:

  • Reduced anxiety and stress

  • Improved sleep

  • Greater perspective

  • Access to clearer and more creative thinking

  • Improved productivity and focus

  • Increased happiness

  • Improved immunity
