What happens on retreat…
I’ve been quiet here for a few weeks as I was in Bali running this year’s retreat.
And what an amazing experience it was.
Over the last few years, I’ve moved most of my work online – teaching meditation, coaching people to drink less alcohol – so the retreats are a great opportunity to get together in person.
What happens on a retreat?
Well obviously, what happens on retreat stays on retreat in terms of what people share, but here’s what most days looked like.
Sun Salutations
We greeted the sun each day with just a few minutes of sun salutes to welcome the day.
Rounding
A huge part of my retreats is Rounding, a gentle yoga and breathing sequence that we use on retreats to enhance the healing and self-development aspects of the meditation. This retreat I ran a choose-your-own-adventure schedule where participants could do as much or as little Rounding as they liked. We did two Group Rounds before breakfast (about 50 minutes each) and one before dinner.
Breathwork
This retreat, I introduced a new modality of Breathwork. In the style of Breathwork I use, we lie down and actively breathe for about 30 minutes. While meditation helps calm our nervous system to let go of old stresses, the Breathwork stirs things up so we can heal from past wounds and traumas. This was the most powerful part of the retreat with people able to resolve or integrate things from their pasts that had been holding them back for years.
Next month, I will be running an online Breathwork session so you can experience the healing power of the breath for yourself. Register below.
Music
Music is a huge part of my life and on this retreat, I brought it more to the forefront, ending many of the sessions with a song featuring traditional Vedic mantra chanting. We also had a group chanting session and a sound healing where we were joined by my friend Sahar.
Vedic Meditation training
The core tool I use to help people overcome stress, gain clarity and let go of old coping mechanisms like daily drinking is Vedic Meditation.
On retreat, we spent the late morning each day going over the fundamentals and setting people up with a tool they can use for life.
Connection
One of my favourite parts about retreats is getting to know new people. On most retreats, people come alone not knowing anyone else to begin with. And this creates an open and welcoming atmosphere where everyone makes new friends and bonds as a group very quickly.
Whether that’s over mealtimes or hanging out by the pool.
Retreats in 2027
I’m excited to be planning my retreats for 2027, which will likely include a long weekend in Australia and a week back in Bali.
